New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed Justice Arumugasamy Inquiry Committee's probe into the death of former Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa.

Chennai's Apollo Hospital had announced Jayalalithaa's death on December 5 of 2016. She had been admitted here on September 22 after her health began deteriorating. Soon after her death, there were allegations of foul play and questions were raised regarding the treatment provided to the AIADMK chief. Subsequently, an inquiry commission was set up to probe the circumstances that led to Jayalalithaa's death, headed by retired Justice A Arumughaswamy.

While the Madras High Court had dismissed a petition from Apollo Hospital which had objected to the inquiry commission, the Supreme Court on Friday put a stay order.

Over 100 witnesses had been quizzed so far by the commission which included  Dr KS Sivakumar, the personal physician of Jayalalithaa. Others included Apollo Hospitals' radiologist Dr Meera and emergency doctor Thava Pazhani. Apollo Hospital had previously said that its team of doctors are being harassed and had suggested setting up of a medical board to assist the inquiry commission.

Arvind Swamy to play MGR in Jayalalithaa biopic starring Kangana Ranaut

Mumbai: Actor Arvind Swamy, best remembered for his roles in Mani Ratnam's "Roja" and "Bombay", is all set to play the late Tamil superstar and former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran in the biopic "Thalaivi", which casts Kangana Ranaut in the central role of the late J. Jayalalithaa.

"MGR and Jayalalithaa starred in 28 box-office hits between 1965 and 1973. While the makers needed a worthy actor to do justice to his role, another criterion was the artiste had to be fluent in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu," a trade source privy to developments revealed, according to "Bollywood Hungama".

"Arvind satisfied both criteria. The unit will kick off the shoot for 'Thalaivi' with Kangana from the first week of November in Mysore, and Arvind will join her on November 15," the source added.

"Thalaivi" is a multilingual film scheduled to go on floors after Diwali and an early schedule of shoot is slated to happen near Mysore in Karnataka. Kangana has been totally immersed in the preparations for her role of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Recently, photographs doing the rounds of social media showed how the actress was meticulously undergoing prosthetic preparation to resemble the late Jayalalithaa.

The film is being directed by AL Vijay and is produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shaailesh R. It is scheduled to release next year.

Thalaivi first look: Kangana Ranaut gets into the skin of Jayalalithaa

$

New Delhi: The makers of Kangana Ranaut starrer Thalaivi, a biopic on late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, have unveiled the first look and teaser of the film. In a minute-long snippet, Jayalalithaa's transition from a 'superstar heroine' to a 'revolutionary hero' has been shown.

The clip opens with a scene from the 1964 Tamil film Vennira Aadai, the film helmed CV Sridhar and featuring Sreekanth, Nirmala and Major Sundarrajan in pivotal roles. Kangana sweeps into the skin of Jayalalithaa, the actress and dances fearlessly to the tunes of a song while boldly facing the camera. The scene then shifts to Jayalalithaa, the revolutionary leader, dressed in her signature green saree. She waves to the crowd with her iconic two leaves (AIADMK) symbol. Check out the teaser here:

Noted film critic Taran Adarsh posted the first look of the film and wrote, "
First, look poster... Kangana Ranaut in #Jayalalitha biopic... Titled #Thalaivi... Directed by Vijay... Produced by Vishnu Induri and Shaailesh R Singh... 26 June 2020 release. #ThalaiviFirstLook."

Kangana looks unrecognisable but we are not sure whether the staunch followers of the late minister approve of her look.

Jayalalithaa was one of the tallest leaders of Tamil Nadu. She served the state as a Chief Minister for over fourteen years between 1991 and 2016. Jayalalithaa breathed her last on December 5, 2016 in Chennai's Apollo Hospital.

Her biopic is one of the most-anticipated films of the year and Kangana has really toiled hard to do justice to the role of such an important figure. The film hit the screens on June 26, 2020.

New Delhi: The first look of Kangana Ranaut as late Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalithaa was unveiled a few days ago. The poster got a mixed reaction from the netizens while some praised her look, some called it cheap VFX and started a meme fest on Twitter. However, this didn't go down well with her sister Rangoli, who then took to slam all the haters for criticising Kangana's look.

Sharing a post on Twitter, Rangoli wrote, "Anyone who has got eyes can see the brilliance of prosthetic work baki samosa gang is there jo din ko raat aur raat ko din kehte hain, they are inconsequential"

One of the Twitter users was quick to point out that Kangana's look was not just criticised by the people of the 'samosa gang' but some genuine fans were also disappointed by the prosthetics. “There are also genuine fans who didn’t quite like the prosthetics/photography...no need to troll everybody under the sun...”

Sharing the first look on Twitter, trade analyst Taran wrote, "First look poster... Kangana Ranaut in #Jayalalitha biopic... Titled #Thalaivi... Directed by Vijay... Produced by Vishnu Induri and Shaailesh R Singh... 26 June 2020 release. #ThalaiviFirstLook

New Delhi: Bollywood's fierce and powerful actress, Kangana Ranaut is known for calling spade a spade without mincing any words. She has a rich filmography and hard-hitting performances to her credit, making her stand out from the rest.

But she stays away from the social media bug, or so we think. According to a report in Bollywoodlife.com, Kangana Ranaut recently at an event in the capital city was quoted as saying that she does have a secret social media account.

And not just that, the 'Manikarnika' actress spends as many as 7-8 hours surfing, when not working. Hmmm...that does remind us of actor Ranbir Kapoor, who has on many occasions hinted at having an account on social media.

Kangana, however, maintained that she doesn't stalk anyone.

On the work front, the actress was last seen in Balaji Productions''Judgementall Hai Kya' co-starring Rajkummar Rao. She is now gearing up for 'Thalaivi', a biopic based on the life of actress turned politician J Jayalalithaa.

The film is being helmed by AL Vijay. It is produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shailesh R Singh. The first look teaser of the film was unveiled a few days back and it created quite a stir online.

'Thalaivi' will open in theatres on June 26, 2020.

Here's why Simi Garewal refused to be a part of the biopic on Jayalalithaa

New Delhi: After Kangana Ranaut unveiled the much-awaited teaser of her biopic on late politician Jayalalithaa, the trailer of Ramya Krishnan's biopic titled Queen based on the life of the late CM of Tamil Nadu was unveiled soon. The latest reports suggest that veteran actress Simi Garewal, who had conducted a tell-all interview with the late leader, was approached by the makers of the web series to star in it. However, Simi refused it.

Talking to Mid Day in an interview, Simi revealed that she had moral reasons behind turning down the offer. “The makers called my office a few times, but it seemed wrong to enact my interview with a person who is no longer [with us]. It was out of the question because it would look forced, and it would be lowering my standard. I have my moral reasons to turn it down. But it is, in no way, reflective of the quality of the show. I wish the makers success in retelling the story of one of the most indomitable women of our times.”

The report stated that the director of Queen, Gautham Menon and Prasath Murugesan wanted Simi to play herself in the recreation scene of Rendezvous with Simi.

The filmmaker told the daily, "We wanted the interviewer on the show to be able to connect with Shakthi and bring out the most candid aspects of her life. Who better than Simi Garewal to do so? Her ability to empathise with the guests made her the perfect fit. However, it didn’t work out. We eventually cast Lillete Dubey. She makes for a great talk show host."

Ramya's portrayal of J. Jayalalithaa in Queen was lauded by the audience. The web series was even compared to Kangana Ranaut's film on the same subject, titled Thalaivi.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday (February 19) announced 50 per cent subsidy for 'ulemas' to buy two-wheelers and also hiked their pension from Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000, during the Budget Session of the state Assembly.

Palaniswami also announced that Rs 15 crore fund would be allotted for Haj house.

The Chief Minister further said that his government will celebrate former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa`s birthday as `State Women Children Protection Day` on February 24. In the state Assembly, the Chief Minister said, "Our state government will celebrate former CM J Jayalalithaa`s birthday on February 24 as State Women Children Protection Day, as she had worked for women and children and had launched many schemes for them."

Jayalalithaa, popularly known as `Amma`, breathed her last on December 5, 2016, at Chennai`s Apollo hospital.

On Tuesday, Palaniswami accused the DMK of deceiving the people over the CAA and dared it to explain "which minority" community has been affected by the law in the state.

Making an intervention in the state assembly when a DMK member batted for a House resolution opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the Chief Minister slammed the principal opposition party and said it was deceiving the people on the issue.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly, debating the 2020-21 budget, witnessed exchanges over the controversial law even as protests by Muslims against it continued for the fifth day at Old Washermanpet in Chennai.

Deepa and Jayakumar legal heirs to Jayalalithaa’s property, part of Poes Garden residence can be converted into memorial: Madras High Court

CHENNAI: Madras High Court on Wednesday recommended that late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden residence in Chennai be used as the official residence and office of the Chief Minister, while a part of it can be used as a ‘memorial’.

The ruling from the High Court came days after state’s governor had promulgated an ordinance enabling the state government to take temporary possession of the residence and the jewels, books kept at the residence in order to convert it into a memorial dedicated to J Jayalalithaa.

The high court also stated that Deepa and Deepak Jayakumar, Jayalalithaa’s niece and nephew, are legal heirs to the property.

The High Court also gave 8 week-time to the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu to respond to the court's suggestion.

On May 22, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit promulgated an ordinance empowering the state government to take temporary possession of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden residence ‘Veda Nilayam’ to convert it into a memorial.

The residence is a sprawling bungalow measuring over 21000 sq ft and stands on ten grounds of prime real estate, at the heart of Chennai city.

A statement from the government said that, “the building “Veda Nilayam” including the movable items such as furniture, books, jewels are in a. State of disuse for more than three years. So, the government decided to transfer all the immovable and movable properties to the government for its upkeep until the acquisition process is complete”.

The ordinance enabled the State Government to establish “Puratchi Thalaivi Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Memorial foundation’ for making long term arrangements to convert Veda Nilayam as a memorial.

The foundation would be chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, besides the Minister for Information and Publicity, whereas government officials would assume the role of members while the Director of Information and Public relations would be the member Secretary.

The Foundation would take necessary steps to maintain the residence and take necessary steps for the maintenance, upkeep and safety of all movable properties therein.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who had been elected Tamil Nadu Chief Minister four times, died of a cardiac arrest in Chennai’s Apollo hospital on 5th December 2016, following over two months of hospitalization.

After her demise, there was a lot of controversy surrounding her property, as there were attempts being made by her acquaintance Sasikala to acquire the property. Besides her long term-aide Sasikala who had been living in the same residence, Jayalalithaa’s nephew and niece, Deepak and Deepa also laid claim to the property on the premise that they were her only legal heirs.

After a power struggle within her party, the AIADMK, it was in August 2017 that Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that the residence of the late CM would be converted into a memorial and opened to the public.

VK Sasikala's volte face: Nephew TTV Dinakaran expresses shock, BJP welcomes move

$

Chennai: VK Sasikala's sudden announcement to stay away from politics, barely a month after reaching Chennai amid a grand welcome has led to an unexpected twist in Tamil Nadu politics, as this comes in the run-up to the crucial Assembly poll on April 6th. Expressing shock, her nephew and AMMK General Secretary TTV Dinakaran said it would be a setback. The BJP, however, welcomed the move, via a statement issued by state president Dr L Murugan.

The return of the ousted AIADMK General Secretary and late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s aide to Chennai on February 8th, following her incarceration, was keenly watched, owing to the impact it would have on the AIADMK and its allies.

Aside from the clout she once enjoyed within the party, she also hails from an influential community, which has its strongholds in Southern Tamil Nadu. Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam also belongs to the same community.

The nearly 24-hour drive from Bengaluru to Chennai (which usually takes no longer than 6 hours) and the welcome accorded to her along with multiple stops on the way, had created the impression of her impending re-entry into the political arena.

Voices from the opposition DMK’s first family were also among those who predicted trouble for the AIADMK, after Sasikala’s release from the Parappana Agrahara prison. While DMK President MK Stalin had hinted about the things falling into place after someone from Bengaluru arrives, his son Udhayanidhi blatantly said that Sasikala would create double for the ruling duo EPS and OPS.

Though AIADMK leaders were initially hesitant to comment to Sasikala’s arrival and the scenario that would follow, later Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami made it clear that there was absolutely no possibility of her re-induction into the party or a possibility of an alliance. The cadre who put up posters hailing Sasikala and welcoming her were also instantly booted out from the party, in a stern message.

In the first week of February, on her way to Chennai, Sasikala had announced to her supporters, about the willingness to re-unite with the AIADMK and defeat the party’s common enemy. She added that she would dedicate the rest of her life for the AIADMK’s progress. In the same vein, she added a veiled threat which said, while she was a slave before the party’s ideology, people’s love and cadres’ affection, she would not fear oppression.

Live TV

Since reaching her residence in Chennai, there were no major announcements or public appearances by Sasikala, until February 24th when she garlanded late J Jayalalithaa’s photo at her residence, on the occasion of the four-time Chief Minister’s birth anniversary. Speaking at that event, she told supporters of her plan to meet the public and her followers in due course.

Over the last few days, amid speculation of the BJP making attempts to get AMMK to join hands with the AIADMK, TTV Dinakaran said that they were open to leading an alliance of like-minded parties. It was on the same evening that Sasikala made this surprise announcement to stay away from politics, despite Dinakaran having requested against it.

“Amma's (Jayalalithaa's) loyalists must ensure that evil force DMK doesn't come to power. MGR-Jayalalithaa’s golden rule must continue in Tamil Nadu, cadre should work together as children of the same mother. I've never aspired for power, post, or authority. Staying away from politics, I'll always pray to the almighty and Amma for my sister Amma's golden rule to continue” read her statement.

However, Dinakaran has said that he would speak to party functionaries to take stock of the situation and contest the polls. “Her opinion is hers, I won’t influence. She only wanted Amma’s children to be together, I tried to convince her for 30mins… but she didn't agree” he told the media. Adding that, the AMMK had received over 1300 nominations from prospective candidates and that the candidates' list would be announced on March 10th, followed by the alliance announcement.

BJP’s State President Dr L Murugan issued a statement welcoming Sasikala’s decision. Hinting at the DMK, he said, “this is a big setback to those who wanted to foment trouble and capture power in Tamil Nadu by any means”.
